The FISA Bill that just passed in the Senate was no compromise, it was capitulation, pure and simple. I've had my suspicions about the true purpose of Bush's illegal wiretapping; and this latest cave-in by Congress proves them to be true.
Gathering data on the average citizens was only lagniappe. The cardinal purpose of the wiretapping was to accumulate 'dirt' on all the members of Congress, and it was a smashing success. There is just no other explanation. For anyone who wants to accuse me of having my tin-foil hat on too tight, need I remind you of how J Edgar Hoover held on to his power in the FBI for 48 years? Harry Truman, John F Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson all wanted to fire him, but backed down. The only one who was capable of taking him out was the Grim Reaper.
Hoover made it his life's work to have dossiers on every politician, with the threat of using them if he didn't get what he wanted. Bush/Cheney filled his shoes well. The evisceration of the 4th Amendment is their crowning achievement.
By a vote of 69-28, the Senate passed the FISA bill, complete with retroactive immunity for the telecommunications industry. Just what the lamest lame-duck President in American history demanded. Here is the roll call of the Democrats that Bush had the most dirt on, and gave him exactly what he wanted:
Baucus (D-MT)
Bayh (D-IN)
Carper (D-DE)
Casey (D-PA)
Conrad (D-ND)
Feinstein (D-CA)
Inouye (D-HI)
Johnson (D-SD)
Kohl (D-WI)
Landrieu (D-LA)
Lincoln (D-AR)
McCaskill (D-MO)
Mikulski (D-MD)
Nelson (D-FL)
Obama (D-IL)
Pryor (D-AR)
Rockefeller (D-WV)
Salazar (D-CO)
Webb (D-VA)
Jonathan Turley, Professor of Constitutional Law at George Washington University, had this to say:
The vote that upsets me the most is Obama's. His true colors are shining through more and more as the days progress. The man is not only a panderer and flip-flopper for political expediency, he is an outright liar. He stated he would support a filibuster of this bill, yet voted 'yea' for cloture, which is the exact opposite. It is becoming quite clear to me that he cannot be trusted anymore than McCain or Bush.
Congress' approval rating is at it's lowest point in history, at 9%. Is it any wonder? It seems we get the government we deserve. Where are the Patriots? Where are the Representatives who put the good of the country over their own venal interests? Where are the people who stand by their oaths to uphold the Constitution? The FISA vote got virtually no coverage in the MSM last night. The Washington Post buried it on page A-06 this morning.
People are quick to cringe, and decry Socialism, yet welcome and embrace Fascism. Go figure. Will the populace ever arise from their slumber? Probably, but by then it will be too late.
What a shame!
It's Gonna Get Ugly,

Obama should never have voted forthis mess and he should be standing at the forefront to fight the entire bill.
However he is still a mile above the Deranged Old Man who also supported the bill, but as always never voted.
In this time you have to choose the lesser of two evils, and McCrazy is pure evil of the worst genre.
It's a sad indication of what Obama would do if he somehow wins the election. (I still believe the fascists will steal the presidency again.)
You're right about the surveillance targets being political opposition to the Reich.
Obama would be pressured by his own party to stay on the corporatist reservation. He will be pressured by the Reich wing to continue constructing the police state.
The corporate media will be their pit bulls dogging him to comply with their masters.
We're too stupid, intimidated and complacent as a population. Americans are no different than Good Germans of the 1930's.
Gathering dirt on Congress must be why they always give in and the scum always gets his way. i am absolutely sick of this complicit crap. Most of Congress has to be replaced. Did you get this E from Firedoglake? If you are interested in signing I will send it to you!
Today elected officials in Washington sold out the Constitution -- again.
Cowed by the Bush administration's pre-election scare tactics, the Senate passed privacy-stealing FISA legislation undermining your Fourth Amendment rights.
It's outrageous, unconstitutional and un-American. That's why the ACLU is prepared to challenge this law the moment George Bush signs it -- and you can rest assured, they'll be meeting our lawyers in court.
Our lawsuit will send a powerful message to those in Congress who played it safe when they had the opportunity to defend the Constitution. You can join the ACLU in sending that message by signing on to our ad letting Congress know that if they won't stand up for freedom, you and the ACLU will.
I was going to discuss this but in light of what Rice said about Iran's weapons won't work I wrote about that and HAARP. I found a HAARP video this morning that blew me away but I couldn't get it to work in my post for some reason. I knew the MDS and other systems were just to instigate war.
Do us a favor go to you tube and call up HAARP nature modification weapon. I knew it! Unbelievable! Take care!
Gathering dirt on politicians is easy. Just look at the campaign materials used by every opponent they've ever run against. Loadsa free info.
I think we need a whole lotta new faces, even among the Dems. The older ones seem to have fulfilled the promise of the old adage that says "If you sleep with dogs, you wake up with fleas."
Brother Tim,
You got me going on this one.
I had to go rant some more on this.
I have a feeling we're not done with this war on the Constitution.
Go ahead and put on the tin-foil hat, BT.
I think the Dems voted for this bill for two reasons:
1) it's an election year, and the Dems don't want to be labeled as exposing Americans to terrorism
2) Democrats hate Muslims just as much as the Republicans do. Anything that smacks of a law that might further the Holy War against Islam will pass unhindered.
It's all a sleight of hand anyway.
The bill is unconstitutional. It will, like the MCA, be struck down as unconstitutional. And Chimpy's handlers surely know that.
What you aren't seeing here is the bigger picture. Right now, Chimpy can't be prosecuted for his illegal wiretapping. By the time this finally gets struck down, does anyone want to make a bet on where Chimpy will be living?
The telecom immunity is to keep the birds from singing, pure and simple. By the time they do start singing, the moronic monkey will be swinging from the trees of Paraguay.
Socialism and Fascism, in my opinion, have worked in such a close symbiosis, that I can hardly tell them apart.
Socialists turned fascist, with the moto of the greater good of the society to the detriment of the few black sheep ...
just seeing what's new! Thinking about Fisa, Rove, Gramm, drilling, Russia and Georgia, I came to the conclusion this morning that it is all worthless the games because as soon as this war gets going everything else will fall by the way side!
Bro,
I think you were right to call for a revolution; and I was WRONG to think this obama dude is NOT A SCUMBAG! He is proving himself to be ...
Naj--
This is all part and parcel of Obama's pandering and ass-kissing of AIPAC.
As I've said many times before, I don't know if Iran is persuing nuclear weapons or not; but I DO know this: They'd be fools if they didn't. Nuclear weapons are a deterrent. The only country to EVER use them offensively was the good ole U.S.A., when they obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
